Capella Kyoto debuts just in time for cherry blossom season

Capella Kyoto is opening its doors on 22 March, just as Kyoto’s legendary cherry blossoms reach their fleeting peak.
Located in the historic Miyagawa-cho kagai, one of Kyoto’s traditional geisha districts, the hotel marks the first Japanese property for Capella Hotels and Resorts. The location places guests within walking distance of the iconic Kenninji Temple as well as the Kamo River, with the atmospheric streets of Higashiyama surrounding the property.
The hotel was designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates in collaboration with the Singapore-based Brewin Design Office. Architecture and interiors draw inspiration from Kyoto’s traditional townhouses while introducing contemporary craftsmanship and understated luxury.
Capella Kyoto features 89 rooms and suites, including 29 suites, with entry-level accommodations starting at 50 square metres. Many rooms overlook the pagodas and tiled rooftops of the Higashiyama district, creating a strong sense of place within one of Kyoto’s most historic neighbourhoods. Several suites feature private onsen baths, a rare offering in the city.
The hotel introduces several distinctive culinary concepts. SoNoMa by SingleThread is an intimate collaboration with three-Michelin-starred chef Kyle Connaughton and Head Farmer Katina Connaughton of SingleThread in Sonoma, California. The restaurant celebrates Kyoto’s seasonal ingredients while bridging Japanese culinary traditions with the philosophy of SingleThread.
“Lanterne” presents a French brasserie concept where classic dishes are reimagined with seasonal finesse, designed to encourage relaxed and convivial dining. “YOI” explores the refined tradition of Japanese kappo cuisine, complemented by innovative handcrafted cocktails that bring a contemporary energy to the experience. The hotel will also feature a patisserie, adding another layer to the culinary offering.
Wellness is centred around the Auriga Spa, Capella’s signature spa concept, which blends traditional healing rituals with modern wellness protocols and carefully selected treatments.
Capella Hotels and Resorts was named Best Hotel Brand in the World by Travel + Leisure in the World’s Best Awards for the third consecutive year.
