Locanda Cipriani to reopen after major renovation

Discreetly restored, the historic property on the Venetian island of Torcello returns with a refined collection of rooms and suites overlooking its secluded garden and the surrounding canal, preserving the quiet charm that has long defined one of the lagoon’s most storied addresses.
Bookings for the hotel are now open for stays from 15 June onwards.
Set on Torcello, one of the earliest settlements in the Venetian lagoon, Locanda Cipriani lies close to the Byzantine Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca, surrounded by the silence, nature and history that make the island feel worlds away from Venice.
Originally acquired by Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. as a modest wine shop in the 1930s, it was transformed into a locanda that became synonymous with understated hospitality, timeless Venetian cuisine and rare discretion.
In November 1948, Ernest Hemingway retreated to Torcello while working on Across the River and Into the Trees, adding literary weight to the island’s enduring mystique.
Over the decades, Locanda Cipriani’s garden, lagoon setting and deeply personal service attracted an exceptional circle of guests, including Charlie Chaplin, Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, Maria Callas and Paul Newman.
The celebrated restaurant, open to both hotel guests and visitors to the island, offers indoor dining in a classic Cipriani setting, defined by lacquered mahogany interiors, as well as outdoor tables set beneath the garden pergola, with views over the gardens and churches of Torcello – “the soul of the Venetian lagoon,” as called by Arrigo Cipriani.
