Opening soon in London: The Shepherd Mayfair

September will bring another exciting addition to London’s vibrant luxury hospitality scene with the opening of The Shepherd Mayfair, bringing quiet luxury to the heart of Shepherd Market.

The hotel comprises 82 rooms and suites across six floors and has been conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Mayfair’s historic mansions. Rather than competing with the grandeur of London’s traditional palace hotels, The Shepherd is positioning itself as a more intimate, neighbourhood-led alternative centred around understated design and quiet luxury.

The hotel stands on one of Mayfair’s most historic plots. The site was once home to what is described as Mayfair’s oldest house, known as “The Cottage” and dating back to 1618, where a shepherd tended his flock. The surrounding fields later hosted the annual May Fair before architect and developer Edward Shepherd transformed the area into the intimate network of streets that became Shepherd Market.

This history is reflected throughout the hotel’s design. Designed by Timothy Shepherd of Shepherd&, its interiors combine warm timber, soft textures and rich accents with references to the neighbourhood and its past.

Three distinct food and beverage concepts are intended to make The Shepherd as much a destination for locals as for hotel guests.

On the ground floor, British brasserie Fayre will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a menu built around seasonal British produce alongside European classics.

The Lounge offers a more relaxed setting throughout the day, serving artisan coffee and pastries alongside light lunches and an extensive drinks list. The space also extends onto an outdoor terrace, reinforcing the hotel’s ambition to become part of the everyday rhythm of Shepherd Market rather than operating solely as a hotel environment.

For later in the evening, Teddy’s provides a rather different atmosphere. Located on the lower ground floor, the cocktail bar can be reached through the hotel or via a discreet entrance on Market Mews and a secret staircase.

Adjacent to the hotel are the 36 & 37 Hertford Street Residences, a collection of 16 one- and two-bedroom private residences set across two reimagined Georgian townhouses. The residences combine the privacy of a Mayfair home with access to The Shepherd Mayfair’s concierge and hospitality services.

In a city currently experiencing an extraordinary wave of high-profile luxury hotel openings, The Shepherd Mayfair adds another interesting proposition to the mix, combining understated luxury with the history and distinctive character of Shepherd Market in the heart of Mayfair.
