Ayan Zalaat marks a new era for luxury hospitality in Mongolia

A new luxury address has opened just outside Ulaanbaatar, offering travellers a fresh reason to look toward Mongolia.
Set within a private estate near the Bogd Khan Uul UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the hotel is set in a secluded valley with a long spiritual history. Since the 12th century, monks have travelled to the area in search of contemplation and enlightenment, drawn by the presence of the sacred Bogd Khan Mountain. That sense of stillness and cultural resonance remains central to the property today, reflected even in its name: “Zalaat,” derived from a Sanskrit phrase meaning “gift from God.”
Designed by Italian architect Fabio Frisco, Ayan Zalaat features 32 rooms and suites, each shaped around expansive windows that frame sweeping mountain views. The architecture draws the landscape into the guest experience, creating a quiet dialogue between the interiors and Mongolia’s vast natural setting.
The hotel’s culinary programme includes 10 restaurants and lounges, among them a rooftop terrace that makes the most of the surrounding sense of openness and elevation. Its spa, developed in collaboration with Switzerland’s Clinique Nescens, centres on both relaxation and longevity, with facilities including a sauna, salt room and chronotherapy shower, alongside treatments that reflect a broader wellness approach.
As travellers look beyond established routes, Mongolia is stepping into view – with Ayan Zalaat shaping its position within the luxury landscape.
