Alila is set to make its debut in Japan with the opening of Alila Sengokuhara Hakone, a luxury retreat rooted in nature, design and wellbeing. Scheduled to welcome guests in 2028, the resort will introduce Hyatt’s luxury brand to one of Japan’s most distinctive mountain resort destinations.
Located within Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Sengokuhara has long been regarded as a tranquil escape from urban life. The destination is known for its seasonal beauty, art museums, volcanic landscapes and panoramic views towards Mt. Kintoki.
The resort’s architectural design will be overseen by internationally acclaimed Kengo Kuma and Associates, whose signature approach seamlessly integrates contemporary architecture with the surrounding natural environment.
Wellbeing will be at the heart of the guest experience, inspired by one of Japan’s most cherished traditions: the onsen. Alila Sengokuhara Hakone will offer 60 guestrooms, including 11 suites, each featuring a private natural hot spring bath, allowing guests to experience the restorative qualities of Hakone’s thermal waters in a deeply personal setting.
The resort’s culinary offering will celebrate the richness of the surrounding region. Its restaurant and bar will showcase locally sourced ingredients through seasonal menus drawing inspiration from nearby fields, forests and seas, reflecting Alila’s commitment to culinary experiences rooted in their setting.
Guests will also be able to discover Hakone through a collection of curated Alila Moments, immersive experiences designed to reveal the destination through culture, nature and discovery.
The opening will further strengthen Alila’s global portfolio. The brand currently has 19 properties worldwide, including 13 across Asia, with Alila Sengokuhara Hakone becoming its inaugural property in Japan.
