Austrian hotel refunds guests when fog blocks mountain views

A four-star resort in Austria has rolled out a weather-proofed marketing stunt: a partial refund if fog blocks the mountain view.
Mondi am Grundlsee, located in the Styrian region, is promoting what it calls the “Mondi Fog-Free Promise,” a visibility guarantee aimed at attracting guests during the winter months. The hotel offers a refund if fog obscures views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. The promotion runs until the end of January.
Guests are entitled to a 50 percent refund on one night’s stay if the view of the Gößler Wand is completely blocked by fog for the entire day. To verify conditions, the hotel relies on a webcam installed on its terrace, which captures images of the landscape every 20 minutes. The refund applies only if the 180-metre limestone cliff remains invisible throughout the day.
The guarantee applies exclusively to fog-related visibility issues. Other weather conditions, including rain or snowfall, are excluded.
Resort director Franz Kromoser said the initiative is designed to actively promote the region‘s typically clear winter weather in January.
